Bikes aren't designed to be towed. Puts strain on areas not designed for it.
I prefer to ride the bike but if you're going a long distance and don't want to ride, invest in a decent small trailer. Don't get more trailer than you need and don't get one wider than a standard pickup truck. Standard flat bed trailers are cheaper than ones designed to haul bikes and can be easily modified at home. A channel for your wheels can be made with a couple of 2x4's. Eye bolts are available at any hardware store and work great for tie down points.
Best of all possible worlds if if you have someone with a "cage" going the same way you are. They can haul all your stuff and you can just enjoy the ride.
